My first job was as a Marketing Executive for a Software Company, straight out of my MBA. "Get a few years of experience before you can branch out on your own", was the advice that was doled out.
I had completed my Catering diploma a few years ago and wanted to get back to my first love of Baking and maybe, own a Bakery someday.
But sure, "Get some experience, earn a living, prove yourself first", wasn't bad advice after all.
5 years and multiple assignments later, I was earning well enough, fell in love and got married.
"What's wrong with your current job, it's more secure than running business. We come from a middle class family, what do we know about running a business. You just got married, settle down first. Bread is available for 20 ruppees a loaf - how much bread will you need to sell to make what you do today."
7 years later Myra was born. "You now have a family to care for a child to raise and save for. It's not a good time to start a new venture. The job provides you flexibility. Your weekends are yours to enjoy with the family. A business needs you 24x7. Give it a few more years."
Plans were always put on the back burner, always given step motherly treatment. The passion remained, through dessert parties, breakfast meetings, to Myra's birthday cakes year on year, the spark was kept alive.
When she was 8, darling daughter got an assignment from school, "Write about the Occupations of your Parents", the teacher said. "Papa, can I write that My father is a Baker?". "No sweetheart, I am not a Baker, I work for a Software Firm." Dreams Crushed?????
Today, was the opening of 13 in a Dozen. One extra for love!!
