I must be dreaming,
Exams cancelled, schools shut,
No morning practice, no Coach Shand,
No getting up early or eating on time.
I must be dreaming,
The days did seem like a haze.
I liked “no routine” and the zoom calls,
I did miss school but meeting friends online was fun too.
I must be dreaming,
Why else were my parents looking like astronauts?
When they came back from the kirana shop.
Another week without Maggi?
What else will I have to give up in the next shopping spree?
I must be dreaming,
My family has transformed into robots,
Sweeping, mopping, utensils, ironing, dusting
We are forever working.
I must be dreaming,
Never had mom encouraged me to create an uproar with thalis,
Or lightning diyas when it’s not Diwali!
I had heard so many ghantis only in school,
But soon it was a Sunday ritual causing much hullabaloo!
I must be dreaming,
My summer holidays flew by,
Without a trip to grandmas.
No treks or picnics or play dates,
Even a simple walk to ice cream shop,
It all had to be stopped!
I must be dreaming,
As my own home feels like a jail,
My friend lives across the street,
But it’s been months since I saw her face.
Online athletics is fun,
But can’t be compared to running on my school turf
When will I climb the wall and beam with pride on the last haul?
I must be dreaming,
Cause I am really scared
This covid nightmare, for how many more will we have to say a prayer?
We have done the right things- braved locked down, washed hands, worn masks
So why isn’t the right been awarded with a covid free world?
I must be dreaming,
New year at school began, or did it?
No new bag, bottle, tiffin or uniform.
No smell of crisp brown paper covering my new books.
No walking up the steps to my new classroom,
Or playing with ginger and jugni in the afternoon
New year at school began, or did it?
I must be dreaming,
Why doesn’t this dream end?
I promise to trade my most precious toy,
To get back the old joys!
To run freely with my friends, hug without a care
Eat custard at school, go back to the pool.
I must be dreaming,
But I know by now, this too shall pass
Every cloud has a silver lining
And we are nearing dawn
